Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca

  • Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca was born in Spain in 1490.
  • He was born in a wealthy and noble family. 
  • He was not married and did not have any children. He just liked to explore.
  • His biggest accomplishment was discovering Texas. He discovered Texas on November 6th around 1535. 

 

  • As a teenager he served as a solider and was the new treasurer of Navaez's expedition to Florida.

 

 

 

  • Later he was captured by Indians from 1528 through 1536.
  • He survived because of his medical abilities.
  • He was a slave for the Indians and would lie that he was a healer so he would be treated better.
  • Returned to Spain in 1537.
  • In 1541 he left his ships on St. Catherine and went over to Asuncion and had government.
  • He was successful but deposed through intrigue.
  • He returned to Spain under arrest. He was convicted of malfeasance.
  • He was banished to Oran by the council of the Indies, but was finally given back to his honors.
  • He was appointed judge in seville, where he died years later in 1564.
